For the first time the concert of the festival ‘Palaces of St. Petersburg’ will take place in the Nikolaevsky Palace, the palace with the richest ‘biography’. Erected as a grand ducal residence, later the palace became the location of the women’s institute, and after that the Federation of Trade Unions was located there. The palace is famous for its luxurious decoration, innovative engineering devices for its time, and most important, for its unique house church. The appearance of the church was created by the owner of the Palace – Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich. It contains a grotto, which symbolizes the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Returning from the Holy Land, Nikolai Nikolayevich personally drew a sketch of the future ‘cave’. Recently restored, the magnificent Byzantine church, richly decorated with frescoes, can also be seen by guests of the concert ‘The Last Romantics of the 20th Century’.
